Harvest at Sea (and at night) – Ch1

Mitchell delivers his seasick wife, Sam, aboard Felicity Snow’s luxurious catamaran under the pretence of care. Instead, it’s revealed that Felicity, a seductive doctor entangled in a bizarre marital arrangement, is complicit in a sinister plan: extracting Sam’s eggs. Mitchell’s cruelty and Felicity’s twisted complicity establish the novel’s chilling trajectory.

The chapter juxtaposes the serenity of a starlit night at sea with the grotesque intentions of its characters. The quiet lapping of water, the ritual of dropping anchors, and the camaraderie between sailors frame what begins as a nautical vignette but quickly unravels into a tableau of betrayal and moral decay.

Mitchell emerges as a man driven not by passion for sailing, but by cold determination. His treatment of Sam—dismissing her seasickness, humiliating her, stripping her down, and ultimately handing her over—reveals the depth of his callousness. For him, Sam is not a wife but a vessel, her body reduced to function. His insistence on “all of them” when referring to her eggs underscores both his control and his dehumanisation of her.

Felicity Snow, meanwhile, embodies a dangerous seduction. Her confidence, sexual openness, and taste for taboo contrasts sharply with Sam’s vulnerability. The revelation of her husband’s voyeuristic complicity through chastity play adds another disturbing layer—this is not simply adultery, but an orchestrated web of deviance. Felicity’s yacht, Mon Homme, becomes both a stage for indulgence and a surgical theatre for exploitation.

Thematically, the chapter sets the stage for a story of bodily violation, power dynamics, and transgressive desire. It explores how intimacy can be corrupted into control, and how personal freedoms twist into sinister appetites when unmoored from moral restraint.

This opening chapter amplifies unease by mixing nautical romance with psychological horror, establishing Mitchell and Felicity as partners in a chilling enterprise.
