By choosing their table’s placement, he positions Sandra as an object of admiration, crafting a performance that both empowers and objectifies her. Their “game” of eye contact with strangers becomes a metaphor for Mitchell’s control—she plays along, but within rules he enforces.
As the evening moves to Redcliffe’s cliffs, the tone darkens. Sandra’s romantic idealism about sailing, freedom, and natural beauty contrasts with Mitchell’s predatory focus. The moonrise and oncoming storm frame their intimacy, turning the setting into both stage and accomplice. Sandra indulges in fantasy, while Mitchell calculates, blending his need for dominance with the growing presence of his inner Beast.

Tony’s presence as a silent, conflicted witness intensifies the chapter’s psychological weight. His queasy complicity blurs lines between observer and participant, exposing shared guilt and hypocrisy. Mitchell, methodical even after the act, disposes of Sandra’s belongings at sea, tethering her fate to the water—his element of concealment and control.
Chapter 11 solidifies Mitchell’s descent, merging seduction, performance, and murder into one seamless act of predation.
