When Mothers Guess Wrong

Sandra withdraws from life after her violent encounter, isolating herself until her mother intervenes. Meanwhile, Mitchell juggles eavesdropping on Sandra with a wedding photography inquiry, where his frustration and bitterness about celibacy surface. The chapter underscores Mitchell’s patience, Sandra’s concealment, and the lies that fuel his predatory fixation.

The chapter splits between Sandra’s retreat into depression and Mitchell’s dual life as a seemingly ordinary photographer. Sandra cancels her date with Mitchell, citing illness, and spends two weeks oscillating between work and home, starving herself and avoiding her mail. Her mother’s unexpected visit forces vulnerability into the open. Yet, even in that intimacy, Sandra conceals the truth about her assault, allowing her mother to misinterpret bloodied clothing as menstruation rather than evidence of rape. Sandra’s silence is not just fear but also another lie, a denial Mitchell savors as validation of his worldview: that all women lie, and lies justify their eventual punishment.

In contrast, Mitchell handles a lengthy wedding photography inquiry, one that reveals his disdain for naïve optimism and fantasy. The bride-to-be, a Christian clinging to celibacy, mirrors Mitchell’s own failed marital experience with Samantha. His sales pitch turns into a venomous sermon, pressuring the woman to test sexual compatibility before marriage. This episode highlights Mitchell’s bitterness, his inability to separate professional dealings from personal resentments, and his growing compulsion to project his own failures onto others.

Patience emerges as Mitchell’s defining trait. He listens for weeks without immediate gratification, believing this measured surveillance makes him superior to impulsive predators. His memory of murdering his high school sweetheart and her daughter reinforces his philosophy: foreknowledge and patience give his killings “substance.” Sandra’s lies, detected through careful monitoring, become his justification for prolonging the hunt.

Thematically, Chapter 10 deepens the interplay of deception, repression, and control. Sandra conceals trauma; her mother cloaks it in misunderstanding; Mitchell twists these lies into proof of his own dark righteousness. The chapter is both a meditation on patience as a predator’s weapon and a chilling reminder of how silence and secrecy can be weaponised.
