Chapter 13 unfolds as a tense and intimate dialogue between Samantha and Felicity, where alcohol loosens inhibitions and old certainties begin to fracture. Set aboard Mon Homme, the yacht becomes both confessional and stage, its floating isolation amplifying vulnerability and manipulation.
Samantha, softened by chardonnay, begins to confide in Felicity about her sexless marriage. Years of repression and silence spill out in disjointed fragments: her asexuality framed as loyalty, her resentment masked as propriety, her reliance on denial exposed by Felicity’s probing questions. The act of disclosure feels liberating yet dangerous—Samantha senses herself being drawn in, unsure whether Felicity is friend, confidante, or rival.

Felicity, ever poised, becomes both listener and predator. Her questions cut with precision, peeling back Samantha’s defences while simultaneously undermining them. She projects a sense of worldly experience, contrasting Samantha’s repression with her own unapologetic indulgence. Her role as a doctor blends seamlessly with that of a seductress, offering diagnosis while planting temptation. Alcohol sharpens this manipulation: every refill becomes a symbol of surrender, loosening not only Samantha’s inhibitions but also her capacity for resistance.
Thematically, the chapter explores the collapse of boundaries. Marriage, fidelity, and morality—all cornerstones of Samantha’s identity—are brought into question. Her honesty is paradoxical: she reveals truths about her asexual marriage but continues to lie to herself about its sustainability. Felicity, by contrast, thrives on ambiguity, weaving together roles of confidante, professional, and seducer into a single commanding presence.

The chapter’s power lies in its psychological layering. Samantha believes she is unburdening herself, but Felicity is scripting the exchange, guiding her toward vulnerability and dependence. Their conversation foreshadows betrayal—not through force, but through charm, persuasion, and the careful dismantling of one woman’s defences.
Chapter 13 thus pivots on dialogue as psychological combat: confession becomes a weapon, trust becomes a trap, and the yacht becomes both a sanctuary and a snare.
