Felicity’s World: Performance, Power, and Motherhood – Ch7

This chapter alternates between Samantha’s drunken fertility consultation with Felicity and Mitchell’s deepening entanglement with Felicity and Hayden’s world of sexual spectacle. While Sam clings to the hope of motherhood, Mitchell becomes both lover and performer in Felicity’s staged affairs. The chapter entwines desperation, deception, and the ominous surfacing of Mitchell’s violent “Beast.”

Chapter 7 opens in Felicity’s consultation room, where a boozy, vulnerable Sam confesses her longing for a child. Felicity, playing the role of a trusted doctor, probes gently but exposes contradictions: Sam cannot recall her cycles, exaggerates sexual activity, and betrays avoidance of truth. The conversation reveals denial more than infertility, leaving Sam clinging to Felicity as a saviour. This encounter emphasises Sam’s self-delusion and her reliance on an external authority to validate her fantasies.

In stark contrast, Mitchell’s narrative shifts into Felicity’s orbit of seduction and performance. Their encounters, orchestrated by Hayden, are filmed, shared, and ritualised, with Mitchell reduced to both object and participant in a sexual theatre. Felicity defines boundaries—her professional identity must remain separate from her private indulgences—yet blurs them by testing Mitchell’s virility and confirming his sperm as healthy. This duality frames her as both manipulator and liberator.

The chapter escalates with the planned “art exhibition,” where lovemaking becomes literal performance art on canvas. This theatrical ambition reflects Felicity and Hayden’s appetite for spectacle, but also their capacity to exploit intimacy as entertainment and commodity. Mitchell, drawn deeper, simultaneously seeks validation and risks being consumed by their world.

Thematically, Chapter 7 highlights three fractures: Sam’s desperate denial, Mitchell’s surrender to Felicity’s dominance, and the looming danger of his inner Beast. Felicity senses this darkness, even welcoming it, while Mitchell fears it may escape his control. The narrative thus underscores contrasts between repression and indulgence, truth and deception, love and exploitation.

The chapter closes on an ominous note: Felicity embraces secrecy as survival, while Mitchell admits only partial truths. Both conceal more than they share, suggesting that intimacy in this circle thrives not on trust, but on carefully managed lies.
