Every website has a serious side. Mine contains dark fiction, complicated relationships, moral ambiguity, psychological manipulation and characters who sometimes make spectacularly dramatic yet poor decisions.
Then there is the Latest page.
When I’m not messing around with absurb digital dress-ups for this page, that page is where I keep the less formal material—writing updates, small announcements, observations, travel notes, website tinkering, and other pieces of information that do not necessarily require a complete blog post of their own.
Think of it as the noticeboard near the front door.
The main blog contains the more developed articles, stories and discussions connected to my books, fiction, relationships, writing and the darker corners of human behaviour. The Latest page is looser. It lets me mention what I am working on, what has recently changed and what has distracted me from doing the work I claimed I was doing.
Sometimes that means news about a novel.
Sometimes it is an update about rewriting older material, recording a podcast episode or making another round of changes to this increasingly large website.
At other times, it might involve travel, home renovations, cats, boats, weather, photography or one of the many fish I did not catch around Mandurah.
There is no firm schedule.
Updates appear when something worth mentioning happens—or when nothing much has happened but I feel compelled to mention that too.
That is part of the appeal.
Not every update needs to be a polished article with a carefully constructed argument. Some are only brief notes from behind the scenes. They show what is happening between the larger posts, book releases and writing projects.
The Latest page also provides a running record of the website itself. This site has been online for many years, and older articles are regularly being refreshed, rewritten, linked and reorganised. Occasionally, I will mention that work there, particularly when a familiar page has changed, or a long-forgotten post has been dragged back into the light.
You may also find news about The Dirty Rabbit Hole Podcast, where I discuss sexless marriage, mismatched desire, relationships and some of the uncomfortable questions people often avoid discussing openly.
The podcast and the fiction overlap. Both are interested in what happens beneath the surface of ordinary relationships, although the podcast tends to approach the subject directly, while the novels let the characters make everything considerably worse.
There will also be personal material from time to time.
Nothing too organised.
There may be photographs, anecdotes, passing thoughts or reports from somewhere Margo and I have visited. There may be household projects that take longer than expected. There may be storms, roads, renovations and evidence that I should not always be trusted with tools.
Mostly, the Latest page exists for readers who want to know what is happening now without searching through the entire site to find it.
Visit it occasionally, and you may discover a new article, an updated page, some book news or a minor disaster being presented as progress.
