Psychological Triggers: Why People Snap Under Stress

The human mind is a complex and fragile entity. Under certain circumstances, even the most seemingly normal individuals can snap, leading to devastating consequences.

One major factor is stress. High levels of stress can overwhelm an individual’s coping mechanisms, leading to irrational and violent behaviour. For instance, the COVID-19 pandemic saw a rise in domestic violence cases as people were confined to their homes, dealing with financial strain, health concerns, and uncertainty. Stress can push individuals to their breaking point, resulting in actions they might not otherwise consider.

Another significant trigger is mental health issues. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD can impair judgment and increase the likelihood of violent outbursts. For example, Charles Whitman, who committed the Texas Tower shooting in 1966, had a history of mental health problems and severe headaches. His actions were a tragic result of untreated mental health issues.

Personal grievances can also lead to snapping. When individuals feel wronged or humiliated, they may seek revenge violently. Anders Behring Breivik’s attacks in Norway in 2011 were fueled by his extremist beliefs and personal grievances against the government and society. His actions resulted in the deaths of 77 people, highlighting the devastating impact of personal vendettas.

The SEETHINGS narrative is built on an unusual trigger: a thunderstorm. The protagonist reacts to lightning. As the storm approaches and grows in intensity, so too does the dark element embedded deep within. A vicious monster awakens and presents the reader with the carnage that accompanies psychological thrillers.

That’s the triggering element, but as mentioned earlier, a pressure point is required to cause the energy to make a breakage like this.

Sex is that point of pressure.

And then there is the destruction. It’s subtle but powerful. There’s no blood. No blades. No weapons that go bang. It’s the most sublimely intimate slaying you’ll ever read. It might make your skin crawl.
