Your Device’s Microphone Has Been Hacked

It’s disappointing when we find out someone, whom we’ve never met, has listened to everything we say, and our device let them hear it. In fact, all our electronic devices are broadcasting our lives to strangers, and you may not even know it.

Most people fear the camera in the lid of their laptop. They worry people can see through its lens — and it’s true. They can. Sometimes, the camera’s indicator light will turn on for no reason. It then turns off just as quickly. What about that built-in microphone? It doesn’t have a light. Nothing indicates that the microphone is switched on.

It’s a typical day at your place. The phone rings and you’re at your computer. It’s a friend calling. You talk about your bank balance, the job you’ve applied for, your health, a spouse, a one-night stand, your last will… and it’s all spoken beside the computer’s microphone. Did someone else listen to that conversation? What could they do with the information they heard?

There’s no indication that a microphone is on, and hackers are aware of this fact. You bet they do. Microphone tapping is real. You should take notice. Share this post right away if you think it’s important enough to tell a friend.

There are many microphones in every home. They’re in our laptops, phones, tablets and televisions. Our inner world is heard by the outside world every day and night. We let them.

Online devices with microphones can be vulnerable to hacking. It’s not difficult to do — made easy by our poor online habits. We never disconnect from the Internet. It’s like leaving our front door open. Any hacker walking by our IP address can step through its door and take a look around. The only way to stop them is to sever the link. Turn off the Internet. That way, the front door is closed and locked. There’s no door to see, no window to break, nothing to enter because nothing’s there.

But we don’t switch off. We remain online, letting that tiny microphone transmit our daily lives for others to hear and use.

If a serial killer wanted access to a pool of victims, this would be a perfect way to find them.

My book was recently written and released. One of the characters taps into e-devices to collect information about potential victims. Not everyone who they listen to fits their perfect profile. Only one kind of person piques their interest, and it all depends on what is said in confidence but passed on by the victim’s own device.

The story’s genre sits somewhere between psychological thriller and neo-noir erotica.

As you’d expect, the themes are dark, sexy and dangerous. It’s a brain-bender and definitely worth the ride, all the way to the explosive conclusion.
