Every year, people disappear and are never found again. Some do it on purpose. They run away with secret lovers while escaping a troubled marriage. This accounts for a few unsolved missing persons cases, but it doesn’t explain it for all of them.
Cheaters have to watch themselves when they cheat because they live a life wrapped in lies. They maneuver themselves out of one life so they can enjoy the fruits of another. It’s easy to get lost while doing it. No one knows the truth of what’s really going on. No one knows if they’re alive or dead if they go missing.
That’s convenient, as exploiting gaps at the edge of people’s lives is what my serial killer seeks. He listens to women talk about their troubles, studies their words, and learns all he needs to know before they become his perfect victims.
It’s an excruciating but rewarding process. Finding a new prospect from the pool of desperate females isn’t easy. Not all cheaters keep their cheating a secret. Still, it’s worth the work if the right one is found. She has to be a cultivated liar to be promoted to the top of his list. Once chosen, he’ll wait for an inevitable vulnerability to occur in her dysfunctional life, to take advantage of it and snuff out her light. Investigations will turn to her husband or the other lover in her web of secrets.
Strong, independent women. There’s a good starting point when on the hunt.
She believes it’s no one’s business what she does in her private life. No one knows of the friction she’s had with her husband for all these years. His spiteful tongue and lack of interest are demoralizing. Corroding faithfulness and fading promises aren’t enough. Their fire is well and truly extinguished, but she’s lit another one elsewhere that nobody sees.
Lies wouldn’t need to exist if monogamy wasn’t revered. It’s usually the centrepiece of many fairy tales. The more it’s adored, the more gravity it has — the stronger the lie required to overcome its pull. Any lie would have to be fantastic to wrench these two worlds apart. It needs to be perfect in every way.
Fortunately, our protagonist knows this too well. He’s measured the level of deception required to engage in a secret affair and is ready to make his move at the optimum time.
If serial killers enjoyed fairy tales of their own, taking victim’s lives and not getting caught would be the best of all, right?
Wrong. We can do better.
My protagonist can think of one happy ever after that’d satisfy them more than this. You won’t believe how and what they do to find perfection in an imperfect fairy tale.
