Chapter 6 juxtaposes Mitchell’s uneasy induction into Felicity and Hayden’s open relationship circle with Sam’s mounting discomfort under Felicity’s manipulative hospitality. As Mitchell learns of David and Anneke’s swinging, Sam is pressured into drinking beyond her limits. The chapter exposes deception, complicity, and control while tightening the trap around both Feldings.
The chapter begins with Felicity and Mitchell rejoining the group after their tryst, Felicity subtly signalling Hayden of her conquest through jewellery. Hayden’s affectionate display with his wife further legitimises their unconventional arrangement, showing Mitchell that secrecy and permission coexist in their marriage. The casual openness unsettles Mitchell, especially when David confirms that he and Anneke also swing. Their frankness contrasts with Mitchell’s guilt-ridden secrecy, intensifying his sense of isolation and resentment toward Sam.
Meanwhile, Felicity’s focus shifts to Sam. Through playful charm, subtle sarcasm, and relentless hospitality, she maneuvers Sam into drinking against her will. Champagne and “cock-sucking cowboy” cocktails become tools of manipulation. The drink’s crude name forces Sam, who resists vulgarity, into public embarrassment when she must say it aloud. What others treat as harmless fun becomes, for Sam, a form of coercion, leaving her humiliated and defensive.
Thematically, the chapter contrasts liberation and repression. Felicity embodies indulgence, power, and control—her charisma binding both Hayden and her guests. David and Anneke are revealed as participants in similar liberties, normalising what once seemed taboo. Sam, however, becomes the outsider, her rigid morality isolating her within the group. Mitchell’s silence when Sam seeks his support underscores the growing chasm between them, as he increasingly gravitates toward Felicity’s permissive world.
By the close, Sam’s boundaries have been chipped away by alcohol and peer pressure, while Mitchell admits his hatred of her to David and Hayden. The dual narratives—Sam’s slow disempowerment and Mitchell’s seduction into a sexually permissive circle—cement the Feldings’ marriage as a collapsing structure, manipulated from within and without.
