Why Do Authors Suddenly Change Their Stories’ Endings Before Publishing Them?

Endings are the most crucial part of a story, leaving a lasting impression on readers. But sometimes, authors revise or completely change their planned endings. Why does this happen?

One primary reason is reader expectations. Early drafts or even published versions might not resonate as intended, leading authors to rewrite endings with more significant emotional impact or satisfaction. Feedback from editors, beta readers, or test audiences can highlight weaknesses in the original conclusion.

Another factor is thematic consistency. As a story evolves, the original ending may no longer align with the more profound message the author wants to convey. A more fitting conclusion can strengthen the narrative’s meaning and emotional weight.

Marketability and audience appeal also play a role. If an ending is too bleak or ambiguous, publishers might encourage a revision to make the book more commercially viable. In contrast, some stories become darker or more thought-provoking to better suit the target audience.
