Most serial killers follow a pattern. They stalk, select, and slaughter with a rhythm that investigators come to recognize. But there’s another kind—the rarest kind—who doesn’t care for pattern or routine.
They kill only once. Then nothing. Months, sometimes years, pass, and then they kill again. But the trigger isn’t lust, revenge, or some escalating compulsion. It’s something far more elusive.
A song on the radio.
The scent of overripe plums.
A specific breeze rolling in from the west.
These killers are impossible to predict because they don’t even know when they’ll strike. The urge lies dormant, curled in the deepest folds of their psyche, waiting for a precise combination of stimuli. A note, a scent, a season.
Spring is dangerous.
The air is different in spring—thick with blossom and memory. A warm wind carries perfume through open windows. Then the radio plays that song. Maybe it’s something obscure, a half-forgotten tune from a childhood dance hall, or a popular track from the summer someone first bled. The killer freezes, heartbeat syncing with the bassline. The air tightens. The moment takes hold.
And someone dies.
The victim isn’t chosen. They’re simply there. At the wrong place, at the wrong time, when the wrong scent mixes with the wrong melody on the wrong day. No connection. No warning. Just a dead body and a killer whose hands now shake with post-orgasmic calm.
Detectives hate these cases. They call them one-offs or ghosts. They think the killer died, left town, or got scared. They don’t realize the killer is still out there, waiting for another spring, another breeze, another perfect storm of sound and smell.
And maybe—just maybe—you’re reading the words of one right now.
