The Struggles Behind a “Perfect” Marriage

Every day feels like a performance. I put on my best smile, laugh at the right moments, and act as though everything in my marriage is fine. But beneath the surface lies a stark contrast—a quiet, persistent struggle that I carry silently. It’s not that I don’t want to be happy; it’s just that somewhere along the way, the happiness we once had seems to have slipped through our fingers.

I often wonder how many other couples are living this same reality. Behind closed doors, are they also holding onto memories of better days, while outwardly portraying an image of contentment and stability? Are they, like me, trying to convince themselves that the fairy tale “happily ever after” is just around the corner, if only they can hold on long enough?

It’s exhausting, this act we put on for the world. The façade we wear to avoid awkward questions, judgmental stares, or well-meaning but intrusive advice. It’s easier, I suppose, to pretend everything is okay than to confront the messy, painful truth. But sometimes I can’t help but feel that this charade only deepens the loneliness, reinforcing the walls that separate us.

Marriage, they say, is about compromise and growth. But what happens when the compromises chip away at who you are, leaving you wondering if the person you’ve become is still recognizable? What happens when the growth feels one-sided or stunted altogether?

If I’m honest with myself, I don’t know if there’s a way forward—or if I even have the energy to find it. But I find solace in knowing that I’m not alone. Surely, somewhere out there, others are grappling with the same questions, facing the same doubts, and carrying the same silent burdens. And maybe, just maybe, by acknowledging this truth, we can start to rewrite our own stories, whatever they may look like.

My book SEETHINGS exposes the other side of our marriage’s well-perfected facade. Shocking secrets lurk there. The book reveals much and is downloadable, free for a limited time.
