Re-Purposing a Tin Shed into a Sewing Room

Re-purposing. If we get this world back on its environmental feet, reducing waste by re-purposing things is one of the many ways to do it.

With our home renovations over, it was time we turned our efforts to the old building at the other end of our property.

Margo always wanted a sewing room, a place to use her machines and fabrics. That sewing room project had been mentioned along our two-year journey to turn our forty-year-old beach shack into a modern home. It was time to consider where it might go. The old tin shed was the only place left to put it. It’d been used to store our spare stuff while we worked on the home. I’d forgotten most of the junk hidden up there but Margo hadn’t. She wanted to get back into sewing.

There’s nothing special about the old shed. It probably served as a temporary storage area for the property’s first owners. Before the home was built, they would’ve needed somewhere to lock up their tools and building materials. The shed was out of the way and secure.

We’ll floor and wall it, fit a window, and put some electricity into it too. If Margo’s going to work with her over-lockers and such, she’ll need that and lights, too. A sewing machine uses electricity, BUT a steam iron uses H2O. It looks like I’ll have to run a water pipe to it.

We’ve got some old sliding glass doors to go on the front of the sewing room. They were pulled from our home and put aside for this reason. They won’t fit perfectly, but I’ll make it work. There’s no reason not to re-purpose them too!

Margo intends to have racks inside the sewing room, so I’ll have my work cut for me once I’ve enclosed it.
