Pushing Boundaries in Writing: Necessary Risks

Every writer, at some point, faces the dilemma: How far is too far? Should we write stories that challenge social norms, or is it wiser to stick to narratives guaranteed to entertain without controversy?

Many writers feel the pressure to stay within a safe and socially approved construct. We live in an age where a single line in a book can be dissected, scrutinized, and judged. The fear of backlash—whether from publishers, readers, or the online masses—can be paralyzing. As a result, some writers self-censor, avoiding subjects that might be deemed too dark, too controversial, or too politically incorrect. They keep their stories digestible, comfortable, and familiar.

But is that really what writing is for?

Storytelling has never been about playing it safe. Throughout history, writers have pushed against societal norms, exposing uncomfortable truths, challenging authority, and exploring the depths of human nature. George Orwell warned us about government control. Shirley Jackson made us question the dangers of blind tradition. Bret Easton Ellis dared to explore the mind of a psychopath. These stories might not have been “safe,” but they resonated because they dared to break the mold.

That said, breaking the rules just for the sake of it isn’t the goal either. Edgy writing without purpose can feel hollow or even offensive. The question isn’t should you push boundaries—it’s why you want to. Are you revealing something about human nature? Are you exposing a hidden truth? Are you forcing your reader to think, to feel, to question?

Some readers will be uncomfortable. Some might even be outraged. But real storytelling isn’t about universal approval—it’s about impact. If every writer only told the same safe, approved stories, we’d be left with nothing but echoes of what has already been said.

So, should you break the rules for your new story? If the story demands it, absolutely.
