Avoiding Topic Fixation in Storytelling

In fiction writing, authors often feel a strong urge to embed their personal messages and passions into their narratives. While including these ideas can add depth, topic fixation occurs when an author becomes so engrossed in promoting a particular message that the story’s entertainment value for the reader is sacrificed.

At its core, topic fixation occurs when an author focuses more on delivering their message than telling a compelling story. The message becomes the focal point in such cases, while the characters, plot, and overall pacing take a backseat. As a result, readers who are coming to the story for enjoyment may feel alienated or disconnected from the work.

The problem with topic fixation is that it often leaves little for the reader to interpret or enjoy. Fiction is meant to invite exploration and emotional engagement. If the message is too author-specific—relevant only to the writer’s context or worldview—it risks being lost on the reader altogether. The nuances of the message may not be apparent, or worse, the reader may miss it entirely because it’s embedded in a way that only the author truly understands.

I recently read a zombie novel in which the author had a gun fixation. Weapons were used frequently. Unfortunately, each gun’s size, type, make, manufacturer, and effectiveness were more critical than characters surviving a life-or-death scenario. The suspenseful horror was lost as gun descriptors took over.

The author knew much about guns and clearly wanted readers to know. He achieved his goal but lost my attention halfway.

While a story can undoubtedly carry meaningful themes, an author must balance their message with engaging storytelling. Otherwise, the message they’re trying to convey can fall flat, leaving readers disappointed rather than inspired.

Please enjoy my novel SEETHINGS. It’s downloadable and free for a limited time. I promise, there’s no guns or gun fixations (no zombies either). I spent my time crafting an adult dark tale of a different kind. I hope you like it! -M
