As Taylor Swift said, “If they don’t get the answer they want, they’ll find a way to get it some other way. They’ll find a way to create a story out of zero information.”

It’s true but what’s fabricated from it is called gossip and any story that comes from gossip is false and incorrect. What Tay-tay was actually saying is she prefers to practise a “No comment” regime in her life. Outside music, she keeps herself to herself.

That’s perfectly okay because the phrase “No comment” is a common response used to avoid answering a question or making a statement. It is often used in situations where the speaker is concerned about the potential consequences of their words. The rule of “No comment” is exercised when an individual chooses not to answer a question or provide information that could be used against them.

Let’s discuss the advantages of saying and exercising the rule of “No comment”:

  1. Avoiding self-incrimination: By not providing information that could be used against you, you are protecting yourself from self-incrimination. This is especially important in legal situations where anything you say can be used against you in court.
  2. Protecting your privacy: By not answering certain questions, you are protecting your privacy. This is particularly relevant when you are being asked personal questions you do not want to answer.
  3. Avoiding misinterpretation: Sometimes, people misinterpret what you say, leading to misunderstandings. By saying “No comment,” you are avoiding the possibility of being misunderstood.
  4. Maintaining control: By exercising the rule of “No comment,” you are maintaining control over the conversation. This is particularly important in situations where you feel uncomfortable or vulnerable.

What this means is the rule of “No comment” can be a powerful tool in protecting yourself and your privacy. However, it is important to exercise this rule carefully and thoughtfully, as it can also be seen as a sign of guilt or evasion. Therefore, it is important to be mindful of the context in which you are using the rule of “No comment” and to ensure that you are not inadvertently giving the wrong impression.

What about you and your personal life? Could you use the power of practising “No Comment” and sticking to it? Not everyone would be capable of doing this. It’s a hard thing to do. The world offers us many ways to comment on so many things. We can comment on anything at any time. Commenting is normalised, and standardised. Encouraged.

But telling everyone else what we think or do is not required. There’s another option.

For some, silence is too weird an alternative to consider. It goes against the grain of social norms. It’s as though we’re trying to hide something and, by default, the resulting blockade can be seen as an attack posture. But it’s not that at all. It’s not even a defensive position, not always. It’s zero information with zero detail. It’s nothing.

If Taylor Swift could practice a “No comment” lifestyle to make her life easier, then anyone could practice it. (Some of us should practice it more frequently than we do.)

The right to free speech needs to be respected, right? Well, the right to remain silent commands no less respect.

They say silence is golden. We should try it and discover the treasures it offers. (Inspired by SEETHINGS, downloadable and free for a limited time)
