Multihull Boat Names: No Evil Today, Just Dumb Wordplay

I write the occasional fluff* piece. This is one about yacht names.

*(“fluff” lightweight blog posts under 1500 words) —those quick reads I throw together when something quirky catches my eye. Today’s culprit? Boat names. Specifically, the groan-worthy ones slapped onto multihull yachts.)

Living near the ocean, I see plenty of them: Catatonic, Try Hard, Hull Yeah, Seas the Day… the nautical pun pool runs deep. Some names make me chuckle. Others? Well, they make me question humanity’s relationship with wordplay.

But the best one this week came from a friend who just announced the name of his recently launched trimaran: Nolene.

At first, I thought he was honouring some forgotten flame. Nope. “Nolene equals No… Lean,” he said, smiling. Multihulls don’t tip over like monohulls do in a stiff breeze, so tea stays in cups and passengers stay upright.

I rolled my eyes so hard I thought I saw my own stern.

I recommended that he paint the underside of his new trimaran yellow—high-vis for Search and Rescue—a nod to that time he nearly capsized his old boat.

He rolled his eyes, too.

Not every post I write comes from a dark place. Sometimes, the world offers a cheesy pun, and I just can’t resist.
