Not all killers collect trophies from their victims. I know I do. I feel I have to. I work too damn hard to leave with nothing. I guess I’m a cliche. It’s what I do with the trophy that brings me satisfaction and, you, disgust.
Put the trophy aside. It’s an art to locate suitable victims, as I don’t take just anyone. Sometimes, it takes months to find the perfect person and get things just right for the moment of first contact.
It starts with research, lots of it — dating sites, school reunion forums and anyone in the community who has lived life and feels they have something to prove. Keywords such as empowered and independent are good indicators. But I need something more than a few words if their authors are to become prospective victims.
Silence. That is what I seek most. She needs to be a quiet one.
You’re thinking librarian, right? A bookworm introvert who spends little time socialising. No, you have that totally wrong. That doesn’t appeal to me at all.
Super-strong women are loud when they want to be, but they know silence, too. These determined ladies often push the limit on everything they do, including what happens in their love lives. They’ll keep secrets. I like that in a woman.
Those stepping out on their husbands are the most appealing. They’ll immediately delete emails and text messages after they read them. They’ll use an initial instead of a name on bits of paper. Cash receipts will be disposed of right away. From a serial killer’s perspective, there’s nothing more trustworthy than a confident, unfaithful wife who keeps good secrets.
That’s how the screening process works — but that’s not what I’m here for. Today, it’s all about the trophy. Ahhh, yes, that symbol! It’s that lovely memorial of death I get to keep after drawing a soul out of a warm, wet body.
It’s not just a reward of the time spent finding that special one, grooming her and watching her life pass; it’s about handing it to my wife without her knowing what it means. I enjoy watching her admiring and wearing it. That means more to me than you can ever know.
She’s already got six of them. I have the seventh one ready in my workshop to become a charm for her bracelet.
