Let’s Find The Bottom Of Our Rabbit Holes

We all have our demons. Some of us are prepared to chase them to hell and back just to answer the questions only we can ask when writing. When I’m chasing mine, I never know if I’ll find evil or glory at the other end. I take a giant leap of faith and let myself fall, waiting for whatever comes to arrive. Many say they’ll do it, but how many actually let go, fall and let gravity take over?

Hold that thought!

While sleeping, did you ever feel like you were falling? You know, it’s that dream where you wake to find your nails dug deeply into the mattress and an inexplicable sheen of sweat on your forehead.

That’s the one.

What if you could go where the fall was intended to take you? Don’t you want to know where it ends? I do.

Nightmare jolts are fear-based. We wake because the assumed outcome of any prolonged drop is dire. Dreamers connect fear to death, so the journey down a rabbit hole stops just as soon as the nightmare starts. We wake up and never know its secrets.

What if we could stay asleep and go where the fall was supposed to take us? And do it without drugs.

Down is not necessarily bad. It’s only an assumption that a dream-fall ends in disaster. What if that fall was meant to show you something? What if that’s where you ought to be? The real tragedy isn’t any sudden stop; it’s the inability to take the leap to find out.

Maybe you’re meant to meet someone special inside the hole.

Falling in a dream is like writing about murder to create dark fiction. It’s not real. You can stab anyone inside its pages. Stab everyone if you like. You can fall right down that rabbit hole, and nobody dies, not really. It won’t kill you to write about it. It most definitely can’t kill you.

Standing at its edge, looking into the abyss, doesn’t teach us what’s inside. Talking about it adds nothing either. And then the listener stands in a safe zone to pontificate on its purpose, share their thoughts, and waste some time. For all we know, that rabbit hole may just contain bunnies!

What if it’s just a shallow pit, whose depth is measured to test our doubt? What if it’s a long tunnel that leads to sanctuary and inner peace? Why does it always have to have fangs and claws? You’ve never been down the rabbit hole to know. I’ve never been down the rabbit hole either. Why are we talking about it and not falling down it to find out?

I’m going down the rabbit hole with or without you, and I’m going keep my eyes wide open as a fall. I want to know what the hell is down there. Will you join me?

‘Forman’s writing style is artful, with the protagonist Mitchell’s warped thought processes masterfully exposed. The author has a powerful and vivid command of language and his word pictures are stark and disturbingly real.’
