Despite the old adage that we should not judge a book by its cover, most readers do. Studies show that 79% of people admit to selecting a book based on its cover design, while only 21% claim to ignore it.
As an author, your cover isn’t just decoration—it’s your most powerful marketing tool!

The Title: First Impressions Matter
Your title is your first story hook. It must be clear, intriguing, and memorable. A confusing or generic title will make a reader scroll past it, no matter how brilliant the story inside may be. Placement is also key—position it where the eye naturally lands, usually in the upper or middle third of the cover.
The Graphic: Evoke Emotion
A striking image or illustration can create an instant emotional connection. Whether it’s a haunting figure for a thriller or a dreamy landscape for romance, the right visual sets expectations. If you’re using photography, ensure it’s high-quality and professional; a cheap or unrelated image screams “amateur.”
The Font: Readability Is Key
Fonts carry subliminal messages. Serif fonts suggest tradition and sophistication, perfect for historical fiction or literary works. Sans-serif fonts feel modern and bold, often used in thrillers and self-help books. A playful, handwritten font suits romance or cozy mysteries. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s legible—fancy doesn’t mean practical.
The Colour: Psychological Triggers
Colours impact emotions. Red ignites passion and urgency (perfect for horror and thrillers), blue conveys calmness and trust (ideal for non-fiction), while black and gold ooze luxury (great for high-end fiction). The wrong color choice can send the wrong message about your book’s genre.
A great book cover isn’t just pretty—it sells. Bestsellers aren’t just written well; they’re packaged well. So, yes—always judge a book by its cover, because your readers certainly will!
