I Can’t Let Go of Some Things. Can you?

There’s something about certain objects that makes them impossible to throw away. Old jeans, a dog-eared novel, a phone table from a grandmother’s hallway—we keep them, not for their function, but for the way they feel in our hearts. They carry memories, echoes of a life that once was, or a person we can’t bear to forget.

Writers do it too, clinging to ideas that lodge in the mind like splinters. A sentence, a scene, an entire storyline can haunt us for years. It might never become a novel or even a short story, but we won’t let it go. There’s a kind of sacredness in the things we keep—whether physical or imagined.

I’ve kept notes from long-gone friends, photos of pets I’ve outlived, and a faded T-shirt that’s more hole than fabric. I don’t use them, but I feel them—and that’s reason enough.

What do you hang on to? Let me know.
