Do I really need an E-reader? What’s all the fuss about them anyway? After all, books do the job of books. Why read a book on a screen when you can read a real book?
If I wanted to read one on a screen, I already have a phone, a computer, and a tablet. Getting another device to do what can already be done seems unnecessary and overkill!
So you’ve thought about E-readers but aren’t entirely sold on them. Well, that’s okay. I felt the same way. I didn’t want to buy another device, either. I had several, and all of them could do this simple task. But as I discovered, there are benefits that I didn’t think were important until after I owned one for a while.
The following information comes from an owner’s viewpoint, not a geek’s love of new tech or a retailer talking a load of e-babble for a sale!
- Super Long Battery Life.
- Easy On The Eye
- Application Non-Interruptus
- Text Enlargement
- Super Long Battery Life: You’re about to go on a long-haul flight and want to read a book in the airport lounge, on the plane, or in a connecting terminal. Maybe you like camping in places where charging options are limited. E-readers will last months on one charge. After your phone dies, your e-reader keeps on going!
- Easy On The Eye: E-readers are gentle on the optic nerve. It has to do with the flicker rate or something. Their screens deliver text in a crisp, clean viewing environment. It’s surprising how soothing an e-reader is to the eye compared to that of a phone or tablet.
- Application Interruptus: Phones and tablets have notifications that blink, wink, beep, vibrate and pop-up while you’re trying to read things. E-readers don’t do that. It’s a calm area for reading.
- Text Enlargement: This is a great one. Books have fixed-sized text, right? If you find yourself squinting at the text inside of paper books, you won’t for an e-reader. You can enlarge the print to any size you like. You can even change the font if the standard one doesn’t suit.
Okay, I’m sure you’ve already studied the memory specifications of e-readers and figured out by now that even a moderate-priced model can store a State Library’s worth of books inside it. (Think of all the personalised titles you could pack into carry-on luggage for your next holiday.)
It’s light, slim, and remembers where you left off. It synchronises with your phone, meaning if you find yourself in a doctor’s waiting room, you can open the phone’s app and continue reading your book on it.

They have inbuilt dictionaries, so if you need to look up a foreign word, select it. The dictionary will pop up and tell you what it is.
How do the books get into my E-reader?
You download them via wifi using an app on your phone, laptop or tablet (yes, I see the irony). This can be done through your home wifi or local coffee shop. Sign up for an Amazon (or equivalent online book supplier. Smashwords is a good one) account to get your e-books. Signing up is free. Books range from free to a few dollars.
Downloading a book into the reader takes seconds, and you won’t need the wifi again until you want to download a new book (or synch your apps). You can read your latest book right away.

‘Forman’s writing style is artful, with the protagonist Mitchell’s warped thought processes masterfully exposed. The author has a powerful and vivid command of language and his word pictures are stark and disturbingly real.’
