“Don’t you just hate liars? I wish people would speak the truth. Why do they lie anyway? Some do it all the time. They can’t help themselves. The world would be much better if we just said what’s true. I’ve no time for liars. I don’t know what drives them to do what they do, but I hate it.”
My partner is adamant that lying is a terrible crime. Anyone caught lying is punished by being permanently struck off her list.
She leans into her mirror and then runs another thick layer of Allure’s Rouge over her thin, pale lips. “If I ever found you lying to me, I’d leave.”

The change in her lips is dramatic. “And honesty is the most important thing in a relationship, don’t you think?”
She coats her face with various tones to disguise her imperfections and accentuate anything else.
She says she wants to look pretty, and she does. Eyeliner and mascara turn her tiny eyes into oceans, and her cheekbones are defined enough to cut glass.

She disrobes, tucks two pockets of silicone into a lacy bra, her butt-cheeks into wonder jeans and then steps into moderate-sized heels to lift her body and legs.
“What do you think about my hair? I love these new extensions.”
Her hair is usually short and brown. Blonde isn’t the colour she was born with.
“It looks good. I like you with long hair.”
She smiles and swishes the excess a few times, turns it into a bun on the top of her head and pins it in place. “What about these stringy bits at the front? Aren’t they cute?”
She winds another length of loose hair from near her temples around a heating wand and then releases it into a gentle curl.
“What about leaving it down?”
“Leave it down? Down is boring. Besides, I have a nice neck. This makes me look sophisticated.”
She slips on a blouse and kisses me. “If you ever lie to me, I’ll leave. Good people never need to lie, don’t you agree?”
“Sure.”
We embrace. She walks to the door but stops and turns back.
“I’m booked in for teeth whitening and a spray tan this afternoon. Say I’m at my sister’s if anyone phones, okay?”
“Yes, dear. Honesty is very important.”
