3 Simple Tips to Speed Up Your Author Blog

In today’s digital world, website speed is no longer just a luxury — it’s essential, especially for book authors trying to build visibility. I’m an author who cracked the speed secrets. I now get lightning-fast pages without having to know coding!

Search engines like Google now heavily factor site speed into their rankings, particularly for mobile browsing (my stats show 74% of visitors browse via phone). If your site is slow, it’s not just your readers who lose patience — search engines notice too. That can mean lower rankings, less traffic, and fewer eyes on your work.

As authors, we’re already battling for attention in a crowded marketplace. A sluggish website could quietly sabotage our efforts, driving potential readers away before they even glimpse our story. On the other hand, fast-loading sites send positive signals to search engines, improve user experience, and boost the chances of visitors sticking around — maybe long enough to buy our book. (Sluggish in today’s terms is measured in milliseconds!)

So, how can you make your author blog faster, especially for mobile users?

Here are three simple ways:

  1. Optimise Your Images
High-resolution images can dramatically slow a site down. Compress your images using free tools like TinyPNG or Squoosh without sacrificing quality. Stick to formats like WebP, which offer smaller file sizes. Remember, your book covers should look sharp, but they don’t need to be poster-sized.
  2. Use a Lightweight Theme
Choose a minimalist website theme that’s built for speed. Many author sites get bogged down with bloated, fancy designs. A clean, fast-loading theme improves speed and highlights your writing — not distracting animations or oversized banners.
  3. Enable Caching
Caching stores parts of your site so they load quicker next time a visitor returns. Most blogging platforms like WordPress offer plugins (e.g., WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache) that make this easy. It’s a behind-the-scenes tweak that can make a dramatic difference without much effort.

A faster website means better SEO, happier readers, and more opportunities for your writing to shine. Don’t let a slow site be the silent killer of your book marketing efforts. Speed matters — maybe more than you realise.
