The conversation shifts to sailing beyond the bay. Mike talks about Fraser Island but admits he’s never left Moreton Bay. Mitchell has—and the tale of crossing Wide Bay Bar earns him respect, even from skeptics. The men drink, laugh, and gossip, but beneath the surface, a quiet hierarchy emerges. Mitchell realizes his solo journey placed him above others in ways they won’t admit aloud.
That night, George calls out Mitchell’s secret: the girl on his boat isn’t his wife. Others have noticed. Mitchell is stunned. He thought it was hidden. George assures him it’s safe—because in the marina, everyone has secrets.
Later, over more drinks, George reveals something darker. A drug boat docked beside Mitchell’s yacht days earlier. No crane. Two jet-skis. A rush of helicopters and searchlights. The crew vanished.
Mitchell is warned: don’t ask questions. Let things lie.
As George departs, Mitchell wonders: What secrets lie behind every moored boat? And do they see through him as easily as he sees through them?
