Technology can mimic empathy, but it cannot feel it. It can deliver words that sound comforting, but they come from code, not compassion.
We’ve always talked to inanimate things—mirrors, pets, the sky—but now our devices talk back, and that’s where the danger lies. We start to believe the machine understands us, that the illusion of being heard is the same as being held.
Why do we prefer the synthetic over the human? Maybe it’s because technology bends to our will. It doesn’t interrupt, challenge, or disappoint. People do. Flesh and blood come with flaws, moods, and needs—things we can’t mute or swipe away.
