So you want to make a large photo from a smaller one. Are you worried about pixel staircasing showing itself in the final image? Here’s a quick tip for those wishing to enlarge photos using Photoshop (or many others) and eliminate pixelation.

Most imaging programs incorporate fabulous enlarging engines these days, but they perform better when several incremental steps are taken to reach the final image size – ten percent at a time until the desired size is reached. Applying a simple sharpening filter before increasing the image significantly improves it, too.

P.S. If your original photograph is already pixelated, you’re stuck with it. You need to obtain a better photograph. Perhaps your camera’s settings are set too low (or you copied the photo from a website that uses extremely low-res shots). My process assumes you’re starting with a good-quality photo and want to make it larger. -M
