Reporting Live (with a Dandelion)

Once upon a time, microphones were glorious beasts—big and proud. They had presence. Gravitas. You’d thrust one forward like a boom-wielding gladiator demanding truth. Now? Influencers pinch a speck of fluff and call it “audio equipment.”

Have you seen them? Today’s street interviews look like finger puppetry. “Hi, what’s your opinion on love in the metaverse?” they ask, waving a speck of pocket lint. It’s as if they’re about to perform nasal cleansing on a stranger!

I mean, does the fuzz even do anything? Or is it just there to make us believe there’s something high-tech going on? I saw a guy interview a dog last week using what I swear was a pom-pom from a toddler’s craft bin.

We’ve gone from “speak into the mic” to “smell my fingers.”

Let’s not pretend this isn’t weird. Watching grown adults speak seriously into a tiny tumbleweed is surreal. Like tech finally achieved invisibility—and now we’re all just pretending we know where to talk.

Please, influencers, bring back something we can see and believe!
