As a writer of fiction, I can easily imagine a future where the real parents aren’t the ones who provided the genetic material — but the biotech company that assembled it. What if we’re heading for a world where legal parenthood belongs not to humans, but to corporations?
Stranger things have happened.
Three-parent IVF challenges the 50/50 biological norm, but it also quietly dilutes traditional sex and reproduction. Petri dishes replace bedrooms. Intimacy becomes contractual negotiation. If we were discussing any other product, the manufacturer would own rights, trademarks, and patents. The end user (parent) becomes no more than a leaseholder or a subscriber to that product.
Could we be on the verge of children born under subscription agreements, updated and supported like apps?
It’s a dark and compelling possibility. IVF may have solved some medical riddles — but socially and legally, the true consequences are just beginning to surface.
