Lavender and Rosemary in Our Gardens

Each state of Australia adopts a favourite plant for its gardens, something that thrives in the local climate and requires little attention. Here’s what Western Australia uses in their gardens.

In my hometown, Brisbane, Poinsettias, Jacaranda trees (see above) and Bougainvillea are regulars in its suburbs. In Western Australia, the popular plants are Rosemary and Lavender. (See below)

My first association with lavender comes from my Grandmother. Her perfumes and soaps were often scented with this herb. She used it in her clothes drawers too. My connection with Rosemary goes the way most Australians have to this herb: Sunday roasts. Yum!

A shopping centre not far from my home uses Rosemary as a hedge right around its car park. There’s enough rosemary in that hedge to flavour every roast for everyone in Australia for the next hundred years!

If you include ALL the hedges from every shopping centre, every business that features the herb in their gardens and the clusters of bushes along the roadsides — and those in almost every apartment’s, unit, flat, and home garden — there’s enough rosemary to service the entire planet’s population with flavourful roasts for millennia.

There’s lavender to fill the underwear drawer of every grandmother and great-grandmother who has been and ever will be, until the end of time. Here’s cheers to two great aromatic plants known as lavender and rosemary!

Here’s to my crazy little novel, too! (Haha!)

‘Forman’s writing style is artful, with the protagonist Mitchell’s warped thought processes masterfully exposed. The author has a powerful and vivid command of language and his word pictures are stark and disturbingly real.’
