Is There a Genetic Link For Sexlessness?

A major new study has looked at why some people go through life without ever having sex. Researchers Abdel Abdellaoui, Laura Wesseldijk, Brendan Zietsch, and Karin Verweij examined data from nearly 400,000 people in the UK and 13,500 in Australia. Their findings shine a light on how personal traits, environment, and even genetics play a role in lifelong sexlessness.

Here’s what they found:

  • Education: Sexless individuals were often more educated.
  • Lifestyle: They drank and smoked less than others.
  • Well-being: They were lonelier, unhappier, and more nervous.
  • Physical traits: In men, weaker grip strength was a factor, and people who wore glasses at a younger age were more likely to remain sexless.
  • Location: Men living in regions with fewer women had higher rates of sexlessness, and overall, it was more common in areas with higher income inequality.
  • Genetics: About 14–17% of sexlessness could be explained by common genetic factors, which overlapped with traits like intelligence, autism, anorexia, and lower substance use.
