Easter: A Sacred Story Coated in a Sugary Shell

Easter is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. While Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ—a moment filled with hope and divine promise—Easter declares the fulfilment of that promise through death, sacrifice, and resurrection.

Before you think I’ve suddenly turned Godly, hear me out. This post is about the absurdity of Faith, not the support of it. I’m still the loveable old heathen my ex-wife claims me to be!

An empty tomb is more than a symbol; it’s the bold declaration of life triumphing over death, of divine love conquering human sin. In that sense, Easter holds a weight Christmas does not. A saviour born is miraculous; a saviour risen is transformational.

And yet, in our modern world, its significance seems increasingly diluted. The crucifixion of a man, once a raw, brutal image of redemption, now shares shelf space with chocolate rabbits and pastel-coloured eggs. Symbols of fertility and springtime, these cheerful icons have pagan roots—absorbed over centuries and sugar-coated for mass appeal. A sacred story became a marketing opportunity somewhere between the resurrection and the rabbits.

Ask the average holidaymaker about Easter’s meaning, and you might get a shrug or a vague reference to “something religious.” For many, it’s a long weekend—a time to camp, feast, and relax before the grind resumes. Few pause to reflect on the gravity of its origin, where agony and glory intersect on a cross and in a cave.

I’m not a churchgoer, but I can’t help noticing how casually we treat something once considered the pivotal moment in human salvation. Easter is still celebrated, yes, but not always honoured. And maybe that’s the tension we live with now: a sacred history playing out in a secular world, where meaning is optional and chocolate is mandatory.

We consume the symbols, but do we digest the story? Maybe not. But the story remains, quietly powerful, waiting for those who choose to hear it beneath the crinkle of foil and the thump of bunny paws.
