A book summary—or synopsis—is more than a simple retelling of your story. It’s the ultimate handshake between you and a potential reader, agent, or publisher. Done right, it ignites curiosity and promises a journey worth taking. Done wrong, it gives too much away—or worse, puts your audience to sleep.
A great summary distils the heart of your book. Start with the protagonist and their central conflict—what they want, what stands in their way, and why it matters. Readers need to sense the stakes. Highlight emotional tone too. Is it dark and brooding? Light and humorous? Romantic with a sinister twist? Let the reader feel what they’re about to experience, not just know what happens.
Avoid excessive detail. You’re not rewriting your book in miniature form. Stick to essential turning points that reveal character motivations and major themes without resolving every thread. The goal is intrigue, not conclusion. Think of it like showing a movie trailer—offer flashes of tension, glimpses of beauty, and a whisper of danger, then cut to black.

For a full synopsis aimed at agents or publishers, 500–800 words is a comfortable range. That’s enough room to establish your voice, characters, and story arc without becoming exhaustive. A blurb for your back cover or website should shrink to about 150–200 words—short, sharp, and emotionally charged. For social media, distil even further: 25–50 words can work wonders when paired with a strong image or tagline.
Remember, readers want to want more. Your summary should tease, not tell; provoke, not pacify.
