Chipper Funerals. A Name to Die For?

I came across the name “Chipper Funerals” this week and laughed so hard that I almost spit out my tea. Do they use caskets or buckets to collect what’s ejected from the chipper?

(I recall many British murder mysteries where farm machinery was used to dispose of a body!)

Fortunately, chipping machinery isn’t part of their business. It’s the surname of their business owner.

Maybe my warped sense of humour causes this stupid foolishness to surface, but to me, there are just some words that shouldn’t go together, right? These are two of them.

Three other words shouldn’t go together, and they belong to another funeral home. “White Lady Funerals”. No one batted an eyelid about its absurdity when it started in the late eighties.

WHITE LADY FUNERALS

At first glance, “White Lady Funerals” raises my eyebrows. Is it a tribute to a well-dressed, sophisticated funeral director with a penchant for white outfits? Or perhaps it’s an exclusive club for deceased Caucasian females?

Some might wonder if the name leans into stereotypes — after all, does one need to be a “white lady” to work or die there? You might as well specify height, weight, sexual preference, and social standing too!

In reality, “White Lady Funerals” is as inclusive as a neighbourhood book club, with no membership restrictions whatsoever. Its name is quirky, a memorable title that might make people chuckle.

Who couldn’t use a laugh during the sombre business of farewells?

So, do you think names like these should make us smile or grimace?
