Standing at the rear of my property while talking to my neighbour, there was a sudden tapping on my foot. It thought it was my cat, so I didn’t look down and check. It happened a second time and then a third, so I broke the conversation and knelt to pat my furry friend — it wasn’t fur I felt but the feathers of a juvenile crow.
I had no idea where it’d come from, but it sought me out.
The neighbour and I were fascinated by its boldness. Wildlife usually avoids contact. Our crow wasn’t playing the game right. The bird was light, presumably fresh out of the nest and unable to feed itself. Crow parents normally feed their offspring until they’re almost as large as them. The transition was seamless, but this crow-baby was thin, and its parents weren’t anywhere to be found. That wasn’t right. I picked it up, carried it to one of our water stations (for our wild bird visitors) and let it fill while I went inside and found some protein to feed it. I fed it until it didn’t want anymore, and then it flew away.
The video isn’t exactly going viral, but the numbers are growing. Half a million views aren’t too bad. The comments that I find interesting and humorous.
Take a look.
Most are supportive, but some believe I’d done the worst thing in the world. My crow encounter was over in about the time it took you to read this post and watch that vid. That’s all there was to it. No harm done.
Now read my novel! It doesn’t have crows in it.
